Species are now disappearing from planet Earth at 1,000 to 10,000 times the natural extinction rate. Arguably, there’s never been a greater urgency to expand our world view to include the well being of these “others” – be they tigers or chimps, salamanders or wolves. On one hand, we do so to honor the significance of healthy, functioning ecosystems. Then again, as an old saying of Pygmy culture warns: The man killed the bird, and with the bird, the song, and with the song, himself.
